there was one active tropical system in the west Pacific Basin. Tropical Depression 25W had formed and was located near 21.1 north, 155.5 east or about 700 miles west of Wake Island. Maximum-sustained winds were just 30 mph with higher gusts. Motion is a slow northwesterly crawl at about 5 mph.
Tropical Depression 25W has a well-defined center that is displaced from its deep convection. The system is undergoing significant wind shear owing to an upper-level trough to its north, and 25W will be hard-pressed to even reach tropical storm strength. There is a chance that 25W becomes extratropical in the next couple of days and becomes absorbed by that trough, but the trough may also move away and leave 25W to sit and spin over the open Pacific. Either way, the feature will meander with minimal change in strength and will pose no threat to land.
